Offense continues to shine as Des Moines sweeps Sedalia doubleheader

SEDALIA, Mo. – Through three games, the Peak Prospects have scored 26 runs.

Des Moines is now 2-1 after spoiling the Sedalia Bombers’ season opener with wins of 9-3 and 8-7. In the first game, stellar pitching backed up the Prospects’ stellar offense. In the second game, it came down to clutch moments in an extra-inning game.

Sedalia drops to 0-2 to begin its 2023 campaign at historic Liberty Park Stadium.

GAME ONE

Fans from last season may remember Coe College reliever Mike Bonner.

After a 3-1 deficit through two innings, Des Moines went to the bullpen. In his 2023 debut, Bonner pitched five innings and struck out eight batters in a shutout. For reference, in 16 innings in his sophomore season at Coe in 2023, the Des Moines native had seven strikeouts.

The Peak Prospects batted .345 as a team. Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) went 3-3 with a walk, Colin Evers (SO, NIACC) went 2-3 with two runs, and Bubba Thompson (SO, Clarke University) went 2-4 with two RBI’s.

GAME TWO

Division I Lamar University pitcher Quinn Waterhouse returned to the Peak Prospects for the first time since 2021. The starter dealt five strikeouts and one run in three innings.

The Peak Prospects led 6-0 after two innings, highlighted by Carter Thomas’s triple and single. Sedalia crept back, and going into the seventh inning was behind 7-6.

Closer Kyle Snyder (FR, Highland CC) made his second appearance of the season and loaded the bases with three walks. He then struck out the next two batters before hitting Sedalia’s Dane Wimberly to send the game to extras.

In the top of the eighth, Jaxon Brooks (FR, Mesa CC) reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a walk with two outs, stole third, and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

With runners on second and third for Sedalia and two outs on the board, Snyder pitched his fourth strikeout in two innings to seal the 8-7 win.

Des Moines travels to Nevada for a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch in Game 1 against the Griffons is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
