Win streak extended to four after Peak Prospects sweep Nevada doubleheader

NEVADA, Mo. – One of head coach Tyler Willis’s concerns was how thin the available pitching was for Wednesday’s doubleheader.

And then Weston Barber (FR, SWiCC) threw a seven-inning complete game in a 3-2 win, and Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) threw five no-hit innings in a 14-5 night cap.

The Peak Prospects improve to 4-1 with the sweep at Lyons Stadium, while the Griffons start their season 0-2.

THE DIFFERENCES IN GAME ONE

Going into the top of the sixth, the game was tied 2-2. First baseman John Doty (FR, NIACC) flew a sac fly into center field to send home center fielder Abraham Arroyo (SO, William Penn) from third base to take the lead for good.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh and the tying run on third for Nevada, the Peak Prospects intentionally walked first baseman Elijah Bear. Left fielder John Schubert then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play (Bubba Thompson-Cole Hillman-John Doty) to end the game.

THE DIFFERENCES IN GAME TWO

Nevada committed six errors, and the Peak Prospects scored four, five, and five runs over the final three innings after both teams went scoreless through four.

Catcher Isaac Short (FR, Nothwestern College [IA]) hit a three-run double in the sixth, and designated hitter Weston Barber hit a two-run double in the seventh.

THE BIG PICTURE

Des Moines has scored 43 runs in 37 innings this year. In those 37 innings, their pitching staff has struck out 42 batters.

The Peak Prospects play at Joplin on Thursday in a nine-inning game at 7 p.m. CT.
