Peak Prospects fall 3-1 in pitchers’ duel at Clarinda

CLARINDA, Iowa — Des Moines entered Wednesday’s game at Municipal Stadium looking to snag a big divisional win against an in-state rival.

But the Clarinda A’s (3-2, 2-2 MINK) shut down the Peak Prospects’ prolific offense, and Des Moines has now fallen in three of its last four, dropping to 5-4.

“We didn’t really bring it offensively tonight,” head coach Tyler Willis said. “Give them credit. Clarinda didn’t give us many free opportunities.”

Clarinda struck first in the bottom of the third on an RBI sac fly by third baseman Cole Warehime, allowing left fielder Gavin Long to tag third.

Des Moines equalized in the sixth when catcher Noah Cook (R-JR, Southern Illinois) grounded an RBI single to score center fielder Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]).

Warehime responded with a solo home run in the seventh, followed by an RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth from Long (Terrick Thompson scored).

But as Coach Willis was quick to point out during the postgame show, the pitching for Des Moines showed up Wednesday night.

Prospects’ reliever Kyle Snyder, a freshman lefty from Highland Community College (KS) and a native of the Des Moines suburbs, got his first start of the season. In three innings, he gave up one run on three hits and three walks.

In relief, Northeast Community College freshman Parker Stewart (L, 0-1) threw four strikeouts and allowed the Warehime home run in four innings. Jeter “Doc” Fulbright IV pitched one inning and added a strikeout and a run.

Cook went 2-4 at the plate with the aforementioned RBI.

The teams each had seven hits, but a trio of two-out single-play sequences hurt the Peak Prospects.

“They didn’t walk us a ton,” Willis said. “We got behind in counts offensively a lot. Didn’t attack early on… hopefully we can continue to learn from nights like these.”

Des Moines gets Thursday off before traveling to the Missouri state capital for a doubleheader. First pitch against the Jefferson City Renegades is scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. CT on Friday at Vivion Field.
