CARROLL, Iowa – Thirteen days ago, the Peak Prospects took a bus to Carroll and lost their season-opener 17-9.
But Des Moines (8-5) has now won two intense one-run duels against the Merchants (8-3). After a 5-4 win in extras on Saturday, they won 1-0 on Sunday in front of a large crowd of Carroll faithful at Merchants Park.
“Getting home at 3:45 [a.m.] versus Jefferson City, coming back, winning that 13-inning game, and then traveling here today and winning 1-0,” head coach Tyler Willis said. “Everyone can see it – this is a really good Carroll team that we played, and we just had guys step up.”
Durring the Prospects’ batting practice, it became apparent that the wind was going to shorten fly balls. Both teams relied on their arms on a day in which both teams combined for nine hits.
University of the Ozarks freshman Jeter “Dock” Fulbright IV started the game and threw six innings, striking out three batters and giving up four hits and one walk. His season ERA is now 0.75 in 18.2 innings, with the win putting him at 1-0 on the mound.
Alex Berreth (FR, NIACC) threw two innings in relief and added a pair of strikeouts, while Mississippi native Houston Wedgeworth (FR, East Central CC) closed the game and threw the winning strikeout with the tying run at the plate.
Bubba Thompson (JR, Clarke University) hit an RBI triple in the third inning to score Weston Barber (FR, SWiCC) from second. That run proved to be the game-winner.
“Just super proud of the resiliency of the guys, given the fact that we only had [four] hits on a day where the conditions weren’t favorable for hitting,” Willis said.
The Peak Prospects are back on the road for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Chillicothe Mudcats on Monday down in Missouri.
