Alex Berreth’s big day propels Des Moines to 17-8 win over Chillicothe

INDIANOLA, Iowa – After a disappointing 9-3 loss at Chillicothe on Monday night, Des Moines had 10 hits and 15 walks in a blowout win at home against the Mudcats on Tuesday night.

Alex Berreth (FR, NIACC) garnered a walk, single, a double, and two triples en route to six RBIs and a 4-5 hitting stat line, and the Peak Prospects (9-6) have won four of their last five.

“He’s been a guy that I knew was really close to busting out here,” head coach Tyler Willis said.

Berreth, who’d had his first extra-base-hit of the season on Friday, a home run at Jeff City, echoed a similar sentiment.

“I feel like at the beginning of the season I was a little timid [at the plate], and I was a little nervous at the beginning,” Berreth said. “So I just have been feeling more loose and confident up there.”

Johnson County CC freshman Jake Porter (W, 1-1) started the game, throwing seven strikeouts in three innings. The Peak Prospects struck out 14 batters total.

The Mudcats (4-9) led 1-0 in the top of the first off a Nathan Maclaren run on a wild pitch, but Des Moines scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Noah Cook (R-JR, Southern Illinois) had an RBI double, and Berreth had his first triple for another RBI.

The Peak Prospects added three more runs in the bottom of the second, helped by a two-RBI single from Berreth, to lead 7-1.

“[Chillicothe is] a team that you can’t take lightly,” Willis said. “They have a good offense for sure, so we know when they score, we’re gonna have to respond back.

After two scoreless innings and three Chillicothe runs, center fielder Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) tripled for an RBI, short stop Bubba Thompson (SR, Clarke University) singled for another RBI, and Berreth drove in a three-run triple to put Des Moines up 12-4.

The Mudcats scored four in the top of the seventh, aided in part by an RBI triple from Tokyo native Kodai Yaoita.

But Des Moines responded with five runs in the same inning, highlighted by a Cook RBI single.

“I kind of felt like there was a time we were kind of getting lax with our at-bats, our approaches,” Willis said. “But we picked it back up and found a way to extend the lead a bit.”

Des Moines travels to Saint Joseph, Mo. on Wednesday to face the Mudcats on Wednesday night. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
