Mustangs’ bats too much in a blowout loss for the Prospects

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – In their second trip to Phil Welch Stadium in 10 days, the Peak Prospects were once again handed a loss by the reigning MINK League champions.

The Mustangs out-hit Des Moines 13-5 through the first six-and-a-half innings and put up four-run frames in the 2nd and 4th, alongside two runs in the 3rd and an insurance run in the 6th. St. Joseph won 11-2.

Des Moines has lost six in a row and drops to 9-12. St. Joe is 12-8 in MINK League play with a 14-8 overall record.

Right fielder Colin Evers (SO, NIACC) gave Des Moines an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd when he ran home off a passed ball. Evers went 2-4 at the plate.

Once the Mustangs had taken a 4-1 lead after two innings, short stop Bubba Thompson (JR, Clarke University) scored on a groundout from Declan O’Hare (Covid-JR, Central College). O’Hare batted 2-4 with the RBI.

Mike Bonner (SO, Coe College) started the game, and Houston Wedgeworth (FR, East Central CC) threw in relief. Mitchell Bouwmann (R-FR, SMSU) threw two innings as a closer and gave up no hits, striking out two batters.

The Peak Prospects travel to Chillicothe on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. CT.
