CHILLICOTHE, Mo. – Des Moines’s offense found a rhythm Sunday afternoon.
But two eight-run innings from Chillicothe proved to be too much to overcome, as the Peak Prospects (9-13) fell to the Mudcats (11-14) at Shaffer Park, 18-10.
Chillicothe had 17 hits and 12 walks to the Prospects’ 13 and 5.
Center fielder Jaylen Ziegler (FR, DMACC), who had made his MINK League debut on Saturday, drove in a two-RBI triple in the top of the 3rd to give Des Moines an early 2-1 lead.
Down 10-2 in the top of the 5th, shortstop Bubba Thompson (JR, Clarke University) sent home a run on a double, and first baseman Noah Cook (R-JR, Southern Illinois followed with a two-RBI single.
In the 6th, right fielder Diego Morales (FR, Bryant & Stratton [VA]) drove in a solo home run to left field to cut the Des Moines deficit to 10-6. It was the first home run of the season for Morales, who has been hovering around a .500 OBP as of late.
But eight more Mudcat runs in the bottom of the 6th all but sealed the game.
In the 7th, Cook added another two-RBI single, and designated hitter Liam Gilbert (FR, East Central CC) flew a sacrifice RBI in to avoid the run rule.
The Prospects’ 10th run came in the top of the 9th on another Gilbert sac fly.
Ziegler batted 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Thompson went 2-3 with an RBI and three runs. Cook was also outstanding (3-5, 4 RBI, 1 R). Second baseman Cole Hillman (FR, Hutchinson CC) hit 2-4 with two runs.
Mitchell Bouwman (R-FR, SMSU) closed for the third consecutive game and threw four strikeouts in three innings.
The Peak Prospects return home Monday to host the Carroll Merchants at 7 p.m. CT.
