INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Peak Prospects entered Thursday’s game having lost nine of their last ten. The 15-7 Clarinda A’s, who were already 2-0 against Des Moines this season, came to McBride Field with the best record in the MINK League.
The Peak Prospects led 7-1 after three innings and won 8-6 despite a Clarinda comeback attempt. Des Moines is 11-15.
First baseman Declan O’Hare (Covid-JR, Central College) batted 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st, O’Hare drove a single into center field to score center fielder Jaylen Ziegler (FR, DMACC) from third. Left fielder Jaxon Brooks (FR, Mesa CC) was hit by a pitch on the next plate appearance, and designated hitter Weston Barber (FR, SWiCC) went home.
With two outs and the bases still loaded, shortstop Cade Grevengoed (FR, Northeast CC [NE]) walked (O’Hare scored), and right fielder Diego Morales (FR, Bryant & Stratton [VA]) hit an RBI single to score Brooks. Des Moines led 4-0 after the 1st.
In the third, Grevengoed added a 2-RBI triple to send home second baseman Colin Evers (SO, NIACC) and third baseman Blake Anderson (FR, Johnson County CC), and then Grevengoed went home on a Morales RBI groundout.
Des Moines led 7-1 after three innings.
But the A’s held the Peak Prospects in check for the next four innings. They scored two runs in the 4th, two in the 5th, and one in the 6th, and Des Moines’s lead had been trimmed to one run.
In the top of the 8th with the bases loaded for the A’s, third baseman Cole Warehime had a 3-0 count with Prospects’ reliever Jeter “Dock” Fulbright IV (FR, University of the Ozarks) on the mound.
Fulbright managed to strike out Warehime, and then Grevengoed caught a liner to end the top of the 8th.
In the bottom of the inning, O’Hare hit an RBI single to score Ziegler. Highland Community College freshman Kyle Snyder closed the game, giving up no bases and striking out the final batter.
Des Moines travels to Clarinda on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. CT.
