Prospects take down reigning MINK League champions St. Joe

INDIANOLA, Iowa – In a two-hour game, Des Moines made quick work of one of the MINK’s best teams.

Aided in part by a 3-RBI double from John Doty (SO, NIACC) and a 2-RBI double by Cade Grevengoed (FR, Northeast CC [NE]), the Peak Prospects dominated all three phases in a 9-1 win over St. Joseph.

Will Johnson (SO, Ellsworth CC) threw six innings, striking out five batters. Des Moines out-hit St. Joe 7-2 and walked nine times.

The Peak Prospects improve to 12-17 with two pivotal games against Carroll coming up, while the Mustangs drop to 17-10 in league play.

Des Moines scored its first run in the 1st off an RBI groundout from catcher Liam Gilbert (FR, East Central CC).

In the 3rd, third baseman Alex Berreth (FR, NIACC) walked with the bases loaded, and shortstop Bubba Thompson followed with an RBI single. The designated hitter Doty then drove in three runs on a double to put Des Moines up 6-0.

The Mustangs’ only run came in the 4th inning on an RBI double from Aron Harrington.

Left fielder Grevengoed’s 2-RBI double increased the Des Moines lead to 8-1 in the 5th, and then he scored an insurance run in the 7th on a wild pitch.

Routine Prospects batter Declan O’Hare (Covid-JR, Central College) made his first pitching appearance of the season and threw one inning with two strikeouts. Parker Stewart (FR, Northeast CC [NE]) closed the final two innings with a strikeout. Neither reliever gave up a hit.

Des Moines hosts Carroll on Monday at 7 p.m. CT.
