Des Moines downs Carroll 9-2 behind Porter’s seven strikeouts

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Peak Prospects had nine hits, and Jake Porter (FR, Johnson County CC) threw seven strikeouts in five innings in a 9-2 win over the Carroll Merchants.

Des Moines improves to 13-17, while Carroll drops to 13-14. It’s the Peak Prospects’ second win in a row.

In the bottom of the 1st, third baseman Cade Grevengoed (FR, Northeast CC [NE]) and the shortstop Thompson each singled for an RBI.

The Prospects went three-up, three-down offensively over the next four innings before scoring five in the 6th. Thompson started with an RBI single, and then catcher Isaac Short (FR, Northwestern College [IA]) and the right fielder Morales garnered back-to-back 2-RBI hits. The Prospects led 7-0.

In the top of the 8th, Carroll cut the deficit to 7-2 off an RBI groundout by shortstop Bryce Yosko and an RBI double from first baseman Ethan Cole.

But bases-loaded walks from first baseman Declan O’Hare (Covid-JR, Central College) and the DH Doty padded on two insurance runs.

Porter threw five innings, giving up two hits and one walk with his seven strikeouts.

Alex Berreth (FR, NIACC) and Houston Wedgeworth (FR, East Central CC) threw in relief. Wedgeworth struck out a batter.
