Prospects and Griffons split doubleheader

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Wednesday’s doubleheader was practically a mirror.

In the first game, Des Moines scored three unanswered runs to win 3-2. In the second, Nevada scored four unanswered to win 4-3.

The Peak Prospects are 14-19, while the Griffons finish the night 13-18.

GAME ONE

Nevada scored two runs in the top of the 1st, but shortstop Bubba Thompson (JR, Clarke University) batted in a run on a groundout to score right fielder Diego Morales (FR, Bryant & Stratton [VA]).

In the 5th, Morales grounded into a fielder’s choice to score second baseman Cole Hillman (FR, Hutchinson CC) to tie the game. Center fielder Jaylen Ziegler (FR, DMACC) doubled to score Morales.

Mitchell Bouwmann (R-FR, SMSU) pitched the first three innings. Iowa Western freshman Luke Broderick joined the team Wednesday and threw three strikeouts in three innings. Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) closed in the 7th and dealt two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Peak Prospects scored the first run off an RBI single from Noah Cook (JR, Southern Illinois) to send Thomas home in the 1st.

In the 3rd, Thomas stole home, and in the 4th he sent home catcher Isaac Short (FR, Northwestern College [IA]) on an RBI single. Thomas went 4-4 at the plate with five stolen bases.

Nevada started the rally in the 5th.

Second baseman Benjamin Loyd walked with the bases loaded, and then shorstop London Penland followed with an RBI single.

In the 6th, center fielder Jacob Strobel tied the game 3-3 on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, and in the 7th first baseman Ryan Davis sent Penland home from third on an RBI single.

Coe College sophomore Mike Bonner started for Des Moines and threw 4.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out four batters. Houston Wedgeworth (FR, East Central CC) finished and recorded the loss.

Des Moines hosts St. Joe on Friday at 7 p.m. CT.
