Eleven hits not enough in loss at St. Joe

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Peak Prospects and the Mustangs tied in the hitting category on Saturday night, 11-11.

But six of St. Joe’s hits were either doubles or triples, while Des Moines’s only extra-base hit came in the 9th inning.

Second baseman Weston Barber (FR, SWCC) batted 3-5 with two RBIs that put Des Moines (16-23) up 2-0 in the 2nd inning.

But St. Joe (27-13, 25-12 MINK) scored one in the third, four in the fourth, and five in the fifth to all but put the game away.

First baseman Liam Gilbert (FR, East Central CC) batted in two runs, one on a sac fly and the other on a groundout.

Center fielder Tanner Short (FR, Ellsworth CC) went 2-4 at the plate with a walk, while right fielder Deigo Morales (FR, Bryant & Stratton [VA]) hit 2-5 and scored a run.

Mike Bonner (FR, Coe College) closed the game on the mound with three innings, giving up no runs on one hit with two strikeouts.

Up next for Des Moines is a trip to Chillicothe for a matchup with the Mudcats on Monday at 7:05 p.m. CT.
