Mudcats pull ahead late in loss for Des Moines

CHILLICOTHE, Mo — Going into the bottom of the 7th, the Des Moines Peak Prospects led the Chillicothe Mudcats 4-2.

Chillicothe (21-18) scored four runs to take a lead it would never relinquish, and the Mudcats won 7-5 in the Prospects’ final trip to Shaffer Park.

With the loss, Des Moines (16-24) has been eliminated from the MINK League playoffs. The Peak Prospects have four games left before the season comes to a close.

Houston Wedgeworth (FR, East Central CC) started the game and gave up just two runs in six innings.

DH Alex Berreth (FR, NIACC) batted 2-3 with a pair of walks. Catcher Liam Gilbert (FR, East Central CC) hit 2-5 with an RBI, and left fielder Diego Morales (FR, Bryant & Stratton [VA]) also went 2-5 at the plate.

In the 1st, center fielder Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) stole second and then scored on two throwing errors on the same play. The following inning, shortstop Colin Evers (SO, NIACC) hit a triple and scored on a wild pitch to put the Peak Prospects up 2-0.

The Mudcats responded in the bottom of the 2nd off an RBI double from Sammy Cruz and an RBI groundout by Jackson Lindquist.

Evers sent home a run in the 4th off a bases-loaded walk, and Gilbert widened the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single three innings later.

And then Chillicothe scored four runs off a pitching change in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead, highlighted by a 2-RBI double when the game was tied.

Thomas hit an RBI single for Des Moines in the 8th, but Chillicothe’s Nathan Maclaren responded with an RBI sac fly.

The Peak Prospects host the Clarinda A’s on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT.
