Prospects mount miraculous six-run comeback, split Chillicothe doubleheader

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Des Moines had lost their first game 11-2 to the Chillicothe Mudcats. And down 6-1 in the bottom of the final inning (7th) with two outs in game two, the same result seemed all but guaranteed.

And then Des Moines scored six runs, capped by a game-winning 2-RBI single from Cade Grevengoed (FR, Northeast CC [NE]) to score John Doty (SO, NIACC) and Colin Evers (SO, NIACC).

It was the final home game of the season at McBride Field for the Peak Prospects, who have one more road game this year.

The Mudcats scored two runs in the top of the 7th to take their 6-1 lead. Then the Peak Prospects (18-25) brought in Declan O’Hare to pinch-hit to begin the bottom of the final inning.

O’Hare drove in a double, and then center fielder Jaylen Ziegler (FR, DMACC) popped out to the third baseman.

Second baseman Weston Barber (FR, SWCC) hit a single to put runners on the corners and would later steal second.

After right fielder Tanner Short (FR, Ellsworth CC) struck out, third baseman Alex Berreth (SO, NIACC) sent home two runs on a single.

First baseman Liam Gilbert (FR, East Central CC) and the DH Doty drove singles up the middle to load the bases.

Evers (shorstop) followed with a two-RBI double, and then Grevengoed (left fielder) fouled off the first pitch before hitting the game-winning 2-RBI double.

The Prospects split the doubleheader with Chillicothe (22-19). In the first game, Carter Thomas (FR, Wayne State [NE]) and Grevengoed garnered a RBI singles.

Thomas started the second game and threw 3.2 innings, striking out five batters and giving up two runs.
